Instantaneous overcurrent protection#

Instantaneous overcurrent protection (IOP) is a type of relay protection, the action of which is associated with an increase in the current value in the protected section of the electrical network.

Electric current flowing in an electrical network causes its components to heat up. During design, all components of an electrical circuit are selected so that they can withstand the current for any length of time under normal conditions. However, in the case of a SC, the current strength in the network increases significantly, which can lead to the destruction of elements, fires and other serious consequences. In addition, as the current increases, the electrodynamic forces acting on the circuit elements increase, which can also lead to their destruction. It is not economically feasible to manufacture electrical circuit elements in such a way that they can withstand SC currents for a long time. The speed at which the electrical current in a damaged circuit increases is such that a person cannot react properly and intervene. In this regard, automatic SC protection is used almost everywhere to protect electrical networks. One of the main ones is IOP.

These protection devices monitor the current in the protected section. If the current exceeds a certain value, the protection device shuts down that section.

The value of the current strength at which the protection is triggered is called the setting.
