Boost converter#
Block appearance in REPEAT VISION#
The Boost converter block is a converter which increases DC voltage controlled by the pulse generator. Step-up converters are also known as step-up voltage controllers because they increase the voltage magnitude, Fig. 1:
Fig. 1 Boost converter#
This block contains two semiconductors, a diode and a controlled key, an inductor and a condenser to store energy (see Fig. 2 below). The basic principle of operation is the property of the inductor to resist current change. When the controlled switch is closed, the inductor stores energy generating a magnetic field. When the switch is opened, the inductor current will be directed towards the diode and will be summed from the source current. The condenser will store charge up to the steady-state voltage while the switch is opened. It will also support it when it opens. Thus, if the switch is turned quickly enough, the voltage will be maintained at the required level.
Fig. 2 Two configurations of the Boost converter circuit#
The controlled key role is performed by an IGBT/Diode pair key, where direct voltages of the forcibly switched device and diode are neglected.
Note
The block consists of two left inputs for the source, two right inputs for the load, and a block control input.
